Sheep
to Shawl Demonstration!!!
Our first autumn gathering will
be at the Farmers Market September 6th, from 9:00 am to 1:30
pm. Come and bring your wheel if you are
a spinner as we will be making a scarf! If you are not a spinner come anyway,
we will have you wind yarn. We need lots
of bodies for lots of visiting!
Kathy Nelson will be our
weaver. Liz Hubbard is providing carded
wool for spinning the weft. Sandy has
already done a beautiful job of spinning the warp from Susan Schuette’s llama
fiber.
The scarf will be raffled off
with the proceeds going to the Farmers Market EBT match program. For each $5.00
of EBT points that a person spends at the market, the Klamath Farmers Market
matches it with $5.00. This encourages customers
to spend their food money on healthy local produce. A great program.
So what to bring; your spinning
wheel, a chair, water, and snacks. There
are also food and drinks available for purchase at the market. Dress for the weather, layers usually being a
good plan. It would be fun to have some samples of your work for display,
keeping in mind that they will be touched by market goers.
If you have any questions contact
Liz at 541-545-6357 or email hubbardranch@centurytel.net
Please come and represent our
Weaving and Spinning Guild at this fun event!
Submitted by Liz.
Thanks!
Please
let Kathy Nelson know if you are coming to the demnstration: neks1@earthlink.net or 541-882-3141.
This
Month’s Meeting
This
month our meeting will be Tuesday September 9th at 10am at Karen Williams
home, 1700 Fairmont St., in Klamath
Falls, Oregon. We will be discussing our upcoming year and what we would
all like to see happen with the guild this year. Please feel free to
park on the street.
The Spinning Challenge that started this
summer has started. The first challenge
will be revealed at the September meeting.
At the June guild meeting we divided up 2 oz of different fibers; so
far, white wool, beige, white and dark gray llama fiber, silvery gray wool and
dark alpaca. Each person took home
2oz of each fiber. 1 oz will be spun with
the fiber only, and the other oz can be blended and spun as the spinner
chooses. This month’s Spinning Challenge examples that are due are: 1 oz of
white Corriedale spun plain and 1 oz. of Teresa’s brown alpaca, altered in some
way.
From the Library
Book
Review for September by Karen Williams, Guild Librarian.
Carey,
Jacqui. Beginner’s Guide to Braiding,
the craft of Kumihimo. Search Press, 1997, 64 pp. There is a copy of this text in the Guild
library collection!
Bright color photos, simple diagrams and a review of materials,
equipment and techniques offer an introduction to square, round, flat,
honeycomb, hollow
and rounded flat braids. Included are a few ideas for using these
attractive lengths of braid. Nice for belts, draw strings, trim, necklaces,
etc.
The Websters is looking for interested spinners to be on their
Spinzilla team. Spinzilla is a fundraising challenge which celebrates spinning.
It also is designed to increase education and awareness of handspinning. It is
a fundraiser for the NeedleArts Mentoring Program connecting adult mentors with
school age children to teach the needlearts,-spinning, weaving, knitting,
crochet and stitching. It takes place from October 6th through
October 12th, 2014.
Spinners can sign up for a team or spin “rogue”. Spinner registration is open through
September 22nd. The cost is $10 to participate. Once you have
registered, your team captain and the Spinzilla committee will get in touch
with you with more information about your teams goals, events, incentives and
other important information.
Spin time begins at 12:01am Monday, October 6 and ends at 11:59am
on Sunday, October 12, regardless of your time zone. You may start spinning as the clock strikes
12:01 in whatever time zone you live in.
Only yarn spun during this week may count towards your total yardage.
Forty-eight hours after the event is over, spinners will submit a
photo of their yarn and their yardage directly to Spinzilla.
If you are interested, take a look online at www.spinzilla.org
If you decide to participate, look on the list of participating
yarn shops and choose “The Websters”.
