From the Library
Guild Book Review by Karen Williams, guild
librarian for February 2014
Knisely, Tom, The Loom Owner’s Companion,
a 2-disk DVD, Interweave Press, 2011. Disk 1: 1 hour and 18 minutes; disk 2: 1
hour and 26 minutes. Not currently a part of the guild
library.
In these two DVD disks Tom Knisley provides a
knowledgeable guide to different looms and their maintenance for trouble-free
weaving. This set is a valuable reference with lots of extra information for
any weaver to access and use.
A fun idea to think about
that was suggested by one of our members
The National Needle Arts
Association has a program called the Needle Arts Mentoring Program.
The mission of the Needle
Arts Mentoring Program, a project of the
Helping Hands foundation, Inc., is to create community partnerships that
promote and encourage relationships between adults and youth, fostering
curiosity, creativity and a feeling of achievement through the teaching of
needle arts.
Would our guild like to
try and implement this program?
Suggestions have been made to possibly try this at the Saturday Market?
The Klamath County Museum? Or the Children’s Museum? Other ideas?
The guild could share its
knowledge of wool working, spinning and/or weaving with children and most
probably their adults. It looks like some materials can be provided by the
Mentoring Program.
You can read more about
this program at www.tnna.org/page/NAMPAbout

WeGO Update
At the January guild
meeting, the majority of guild members voted to apply for a grant from WeGo for
an upcoming gathering at Mt. Bachelor Village in the fall of 2015. If the guild gets the grant, we will be
working with the Bend Guild and pooling our monies to put on educational
spinning and weaving workshops. Kathy has graciously offered to apply for the
grant for the guild. Thank you Kathy.

This is a name draft for “Klamath
Guild” using one system. There are many
different systems. For this one, the
numbers 1, 2, 3 & 4 were assigned to every 4th letter in the
alphabet. So, A is 1, B is 2, C is 3 D is 4 and then E is 1 and so on. The next
step after assigning, is to make sure that there are not two numbers (which are
shafts, next to each other). Initially K and L are both 2’s, so in weaving that
would make a float, or two warp threads doing the same thing next to each
other. So I added a warp thread on a different shaft to separate those threads.
So I added a 3. Between T and H , those warps, even though they are not the
same number, if threaded in plain weave they would end up being in the same set
of threads, doing the same thing, so I needed to add another warp to separate
them. It can’t be a 2 or 4, so again, I
added a warp thread on harness 3 because harness 1 was used just before the T
or in other words, a warp thread on harness 4.
Carol Wylie led us in this name
drafting for weaving in a meeting this past fall. It was an exercise in drafting, and also
custom drafting for whatever you might use it for. For example; a newly married couple with
their new last name, or a baby gift with the baby’s name…….
This draft is only one repeat for
the threading, and you could repeat this draft across the warp as many times as
you wish.
You could treadle it as you wish.
If I were to weave it I probably would put a plain weave, or tabby thread in
between each row.
I have not tried this yet. If you try it, please let me know how it
turns out. I would love to see it.
