2013 book review by Karen Williams,
guild librarian
The Complete guide to
Spinning Yarn, Techniques, Projects, and Recipes. Brenda
Gibson, 144 pages, St. Martin’s Press, 2011. Not yet part of the guild library.
Books
denoting that they are the “complete” reference on a specific topic always
leave me somewhat suspicious of that claim.
My skepticism aside, Ms. Gibson’s book does provide a well-organized
guide which covers tools for the job of handspinning, step-by-step techniques
for fiber preparation and handling, and specialty yarn recipes. In addition, there’s a scant presentation of
some basic projects using handspun yarns in weaving and knitting, and, for
those inspired, there is a discussion of the development of a professional
handspinning business. Throughout this
book are sharp colorful photos of tools and associated handspinning machinery
in use, as well as yarns and accompanying knitted swatches.
Shops with Classes around the Area
Want to try
something fun this summer? Do you have a
project in mind to get done soon, or have you created an item you really like,
be it yarn or an item to wear or something for your home or something created
solely as a piece of art? Why not enter it at the Black Sheep Gathering Fiber
Arts competition this year? Your item will
be constructively critiqued and judged by a knowledgeable expert and viewed by
many admiring fiber folks. There are ribbons, and trophies and your item could
be the people’s choice voted on by anyone viewing the show! Liz will have forms at the March meeting. The
forms are also online at www.blacksheepgathering.org

If anyone would like to weave on the loom that is for
sale at the Klamath County Museum, please feel free to do so. The Museum loves
to have weavers come and show how it’s done.
Please call Carol Wylie if you plan to do so. 541-882-4031.
We are going to add information to our guild member
roster. If you are at the meetings,
please fill out the information sheet that will be passed around. Many of the
folks either in the guild or interested in fiber, that our on our list don’t
know what other folks do, have or what they may have experience or expertise
in, so it has been suggested that we have each person on the roster have their
info by their name.
Are you a
spinner? Weaver? Knitter?
Crocheter? Other fiber interest? Do you raise fiber animals? If so, what kind? Do you sell any fibers or other items members
would be interested in? Do you raise
livestock dogs? What would you like to
learn about? What are your main interests and/or experiences? Add how would you
like to describe yourself.
If you can’t make the meetings, but would like your information
added, please send Karen Williams or I your information and we can add it.
Thank you to Kathy Nelson for designing the spread sheet to do this.
