From the Library

Guild book review for January 2013 by Karen Williams, guild librarian

Color, A Natural History of Palette, by Victoria Finlay, Random House, 2004, 448 pages.  (Liz Hubbard’s copy)

Ochre, black and brown, white red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet – a rainbow of color is explored by Ms. Finlay.  Snippets of pigment and dyeing history are brought to light with Victoria Finlay’s travels to the far corners of Earth.  Each color source and tale she seeks seems to have past secrets of  intrigue, mystery and occasional mayhem which don’t always get fully disclosed before she is off on another track.  This book gives a fascinating glimpse into some of the stories of pigments and dyes.
